Transport & Travel Assistance in Western Melbourne
Getting where you need to go, safely and on your schedule, with a friendly companion on the journey.
What it is

Transport and travel assistance is support to get where you need to go when getting there on your own is difficult. It might be a medical appointment, a therapy session, work, study, the shops, or a social outing. For many participants, the barrier to taking part in everyday life is not the activity itself. It is the logistics of getting there.
This support can take a few different forms depending on what the person needs. Some participants need a support worker to accompany them on public transport, helping them navigate the system and feel confident on the journey. Others need someone to drive them, because public transport is not accessible or practical for their situation. Some are working towards travelling independently, and use travel support as a way to build those skills over time.
Transport support usually sits under the Assistance with Daily Life budget in Core supports, and there is also separate transport funding that helps with the cost of getting around. The way these work together can be confusing, so we help participants and families understand exactly what they have available and how to use it.
We see transport as more than just a ride. The journey is part of the person's day, and it should feel comfortable, not stressful. A support worker who accompanies a participant is there to help with the practical side, but also to provide company, reassurance, and an extra pair of hands. For someone who finds travel anxiety inducing, having a familiar, calm person with them can make all the difference.
Reliability matters enormously here. If a participant has a medical appointment at a specific time, they need to know their transport will get them there on time, every time. We plan trips carefully, build in buffer time for the unexpected, and communicate clearly if anything changes. A missed appointment is not just an inconvenience. It can mean weeks of waiting for the next one.
We also think about the return journey. Getting somewhere is only half the trip. The person needs to get home safely too, often when they are tired or after a long appointment. We make sure the full round trip is planned, not just the way there.
Who it suits
For a participant who needs support to travel to appointments, work, study, shopping or social activities, and would like a dependable, friendly companion for the trip.
How Mirai delivers it
We build travel support around the person's actual week. Before we start, we sit down and map out where they need to go, how often, and what kind of support they need for each trip. A weekly therapy appointment might need a regular, reliable slot. A one off specialist visit might need more planning. A weekly shop might be a chance to build independence. Each trip is treated on its own terms.
For participants who want to build travel skills, we use the journeys as learning opportunities. We might start by accompanying them on the full trip, then gradually step back as they gain confidence. We practice reading timetables, finding the right platform, dealing with delays, and asking for help when needed. The aim is for the person to eventually manage the trip on their own, or with minimal support.
For participants who need ongoing accompaniment, we focus on making the journey as comfortable and low stress as possible. We use support workers the person knows, plan the route carefully, and build in time so the trip does not feel rushed. If the person uses a wheelchair or has mobility needs, we make sure the vehicle and route are suitable.
We are realistic about what is possible. If a trip is genuinely difficult, we will say so and help explore alternatives. We do not overpromise and then leave the person stranded. If public transport is not workable, we will help find another option. If a particular time of day is too stressful, we will suggest a quieter time.
Communication is central. We confirm trips in advance, let the person know who is coming, and give a clear sense of timing. If something changes on the day, we let them know as early as we can. No one should be left waiting and wondering whether their transport is going to turn up.
We also keep an eye on the bigger picture. If we notice a participant is struggling more with travel than they used to, or that their needs have changed, we mention it gently and, with their permission, to their family or support coordinator. Travel support often puts us in a position to notice changes early.
