Respite & Short-Term Support in Western Melbourne
A break that refreshes everyone. Quality support for the participant, and a chance for family carers to rest.
What it is

Respite is short term support that gives a family carer a break while making sure the person they care for is well looked after and enjoys themselves. It is one of the most undervalued supports in the system, but for families who provide ongoing care, it can be the thing that keeps them going.
Caring for a family member is rewarding, but it is also relentless. Without regular breaks, carers run the risk of exhaustion, stress, and burnout, which ultimately affects the person they are caring for too. Respite gives the carer time to rest, attend appointments, spend time with other family members, or simply have a quiet day to themselves. At the same time, it gives the participant a change of scene, new company, and activities they enjoy.
Respite can take several forms. It might be a few hours of support in the family home while the carer goes out. It might be a full day out in the community. It can be an overnight stay or a short stay of a few days, either in the home with support or in a suitable short term accommodation setting. The right option depends on what the participant enjoys, what the family needs, and what the plan allows.
This support usually sits under the Assistance with Daily Life budget in Core supports, and short term accommodation is often funded as a block that can be used flexibly across the year. We help families understand what they have available and plan ahead so the breaks are regular and predictable rather than last minute.
We see respite as a positive experience for the participant, not just a service for the carer. A break should be something the person looks forward to, not something they endure. That means planning activities they enjoy, making sure they feel comfortable and safe, and matching them with support workers they know and trust.
For participants who find change difficult, we plan respite carefully. We might start with short in home support while the carer is out, build up to day trips, and eventually work towards overnight stays. We go at the person's pace, and we keep the carer informed about how things went.
Who it suits
For families and carers who need a short break, and for a participant who would enjoy a change of scene and good company while their usual carer recharges.
How Mirai delivers it
We plan respite around the person first. What do they enjoy? What helps them feel relaxed? What do they find difficult about a change in routine? We talk with the participant and their family to understand all of this before we plan anything, because a break only works if the person feels comfortable.
For in home respite, we send support workers the person already knows where possible. The routine stays familiar, the environment does not change, and the carer can step out knowing their family member is in good hands. We follow the person's usual routine as much as they want us to, and we bring activities or interests that suit them.
For community based respite, we plan outings around what the person enjoys. That might be a walk in a local park, a visit to a favourite café, a trip to the library, or an activity they have been wanting to try. We keep the pace comfortable and build in plenty of downtime, because the point is for the person to enjoy themselves, not to pack the day full.
For overnight or short stays, we are careful about the setting. The accommodation needs to be suitable, accessible where needed, and somewhere the person can feel at ease. We visit beforehand where we can, talk through what to expect, and make sure the person knows who will be with them. For participants who have never stayed away from home, we build up to it gradually.
We keep carers informed in whatever way suits them. Some want a quick text to know everything is fine. Others want a fuller picture of how the day went. We follow their preference, and we always let them know straight away if anything significant comes up.
We also help families plan respite ahead of time rather than waiting until they are exhausted. Regular, scheduled breaks are far more effective than emergency respite, and they give both the carer and the participant something predictable to rely on. We can help work out a pattern that fits the family's life and the plan's budget.
